Point of Care Specialist

About the Job:

The Point of Care Specialist supervises, coordinates, designs, evaluates, and implements point-of-care (POC) patient testing throughout Southern New Hampshire Health System (SNHHS). This role ensures compliance with SNH requirements and accreditation standards through training and ongoing competency assessment of staff. The Specialist collaborates with nursing and laboratory leadership to maintain quality control, proficiency testing, and training across all POC testing sites.

What You’ll Do:

  • Monitor and maintain all point-of-care testing including training, competency, reporting, and quality control.
  • Evaluate and validate new equipment, tests, and software.
  • Maintain documentation for compliance with accreditation standards.
  • Write and maintain SNH POC testing policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical training and competency assessments for clinical staff.
  • Collaborate with lab leadership and other departments to assess new testing opportunities.
  • Troubleshoot instrument issues and ensure timely resolution.
  • Perform and evaluate Quality Control and Proficiency Testing.
  • Participate in departmental and hospital-wide Quality Assurance activities.
  • Maintain proficiency in laboratory systems and instrumentation.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and management.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and monitor supply levels.
  • Support organizational goals and strategic initiatives.

Who You Are:

Education & Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, MT (ASCP) or exam eligible; or BS in Biology or Chemistry required.
  • MT/MLS certification within the first year of hire required.
  • Specialty certification in Microbiology, Hematology, Chemistry, or Blood Bank is acceptable.
  • Bachelor’s in MLS/Medical Technology preferred.

Experience:

  • 3–5 years of clinical lab experience required.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Ability to work in at least one clinical lab department.
  • Preferred knowledge of Epic, Beaker, RALS, Peer QC, CLIA regulations, and hardware network programming.
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and LIS systems.
  • Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to teach and coach non-laboratory clinical personnel.
  • Maintain confidentiality and multitask effectively.
